When Does Life Begin?

The illogicality of these people is stunning. The question was “When does life begin?”

Life is a biological state of being. The dictionary defines “life” as “an organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction” A fertilized egg at the moment of conception has metabolism, is growing, reacts to stimuli, and has the potential for reproduction (just like a toddler). Any scientist worth his or her salt will tell you that when differentiating between living and non-living things, a one celled zygote (what we all started as) is definitely “living.”

And yet these people firmly believe (or say they believe) that life begins:

  • “at birth”
  • “when there’s an electrical impulse from the brain but not when the heart beats”
  • “when the woman decides she’s going to go for it” (in other words, whenever the woman says it’s alive).
The second answer (the brain)?  The heart begins to beat three to four weeks after conception.  The brain sends electrical impulses as at six weeks.  So I guess this woman is ok with abortions up to six weeks then, but no older, right?  Doubtful.  And the last answer is the most illogical of all.
I can have a rational discussion with someone who agrees that the fetus is “alive” but doesn’t consider the fetus a “person” until birth. I would disagree with them, but our discussion would be philosophical, not biological. I can debate those things. But these people want abortion to be legal all the way up to birth. With the fetus viable after week 24, and with a 90% chance of survivability outside the womb after week 27, these people that want abortion legal after that point are basically saying “We would rather go through a procedure to remove the fetus from the woman’s body, but kill the fetus, even though there is a procedure that can both remove the fetus AND let it live.” These people even want abortion legal all the way up to birth.

Let that sink in: let’s say a baby was born at 1pm. Ten fingers, ten toes, 7 pounds 5 ounces. Healthy.
These women think that at 12:55 a woman should have the right to say “kill it,” and the medical staff should accept her decision as right and just and good.  I don’t understand that kind of thinking.  To me, it’s evil.  And that’s why I fight it.

Trump or Cruz

So Ben Carson finally realized that he has no chance.  He finally realized that it isn’t the party leadership that doesn’t want him, it’s the party members.  The people have spoken, and he has listened.  If only he had done so before yesterday, we might be talking about how Ted Cruz got more delegates yesterday than Donald Trump.   But it might be too little too late.

At this point in the race, I only see three possibilities:
1. Donald Trump wins the nomination by virtue of getting enough delegates
2. Marco Rubio drops out and endorses Ted Cruz, and their combined supporters are enough to push Ted Cruz over the top to win the nomination.
3. Nobody wins enough delegates, and it goes to convention, where the 65% of the party that doesn’t want Trump to be the nominee finally realizes that they need to come together and support one nominee.

I’m no political expert, but I think the chances of #1 happening are high.  There are several “winner take all” states coming up, and if Trump takes both Ohio and Florida, it would be almost over at that point.

Option two is dependent on the ability of a politician to realize that he doesn’t have enough support to win, and that he needs to support Cruz because Cruz is the only other Conservative left in the race. So we’re talking about a politician being humble.  Chances are not good here.

Option three is only possible if option one somehow doesn’t happen.  It looks bleak at this point for America, because if Trump is the nominee, it is almost certain that we will be looking at four to eight years of President Hillary Clinton.  We’d be looking at one of the most liberal Presidents ever appointing at least one or two Supreme Court justices. We’d be looking at the continuation (and likely expansion) of Obamacare.  All in all, not a good picture for those of us who hold to conservative principles.

And the spectre of a Clinton Presidency is why I am calling on Marco Rubio and John Kasich to both drop out now, before any more delegates are won by Trump.   Because the only way out of a Trump vs Clinton race this fall is for Rubio and Kasich to unite behind the only Conservative with a chance to beat Trump.  And that conservative is Ted Cruz.

The NOTA Doctrine

I am tired.    I am tired of politics in America too frequently turning into choosing which of the candidates is the least worst.  What other thing in our lives do we choose this way?

Spouse?  “Well, she wasn’t as bad as any of the other girlfriends I’ve had, so I decided to go with her.”

Car? “This car is the least-ugly car on the lot.”

Restaurant?  “I get sick at this restaurant less often than any other.”

No. We don’t work that way with anything else, so why do we think it’s a good method for choosing our leaders?   And yet, what else can we do?  There’s a paucity of good people running for office.  Why?  Because politics has changed from the days of Washington, Jefferson, and even Lincoln. Politics used to be about who would be the BEST for our country.  They used to find the best man and then convince him to run. But now it seems that if you willingly run for office, that’s a sign you don’t belong there. The best people for the job are frequently not even running because they want nothing to do with what politics has become in this country.

Right now we have a man running for President that might be a good man for the job:  Ben Carson.  He isn’t perfect, and he has made some mistakes both politically and personally (his non-forgiveness of Ted Cruz being one of these), but I believe him to be an honest man who wants to see our country get better. As a surgeon, his job is healing sick patients.  As a neurosurgeon, his specialty is healing patients who are literally sick in the head.  Sounds like he would be a good fit for the Presidency.  But he won’t win. Why? For the very reasons I’ve laid out here.  In our society, generally speaking, good men do not run for President.  It would be extremely difficult for a good man to become President in our current age.

Some of the people in office right now are there by virtue of the fact that there is simply no better alternative.

So what do we do?  I submit that the only solution is what I would like to call “The NOTA Doctrine.”   What does this mean?  Simply stated, we pass a law that states every ballot in every precinct in America in every election for office must have a candidate listed as “NOTA (None Of The Above)”.    If, in any election, NOTA gets more votes than any other candidate, the election for that office must be conducted a set amount of time later (a month or two, possibly), and NONE of the original people listed on the ballot are eligible to run the second time (or any subsequent time during that election cycle).  This process continues until a candidate gets more votes than NOTA.

I believe that after a few elections like this, the problem would solve itself as those people who have too many negative characteristics would be weeded out.  After losing three or four elections, most of these people would simply find something else to do.  Of course there will be people who just can’t take a hint, but NOTA would keep on letting them know that the American people would literally rather have nobody do the job rather than them.

And that’s the NOTA Doctrine.   You heard it here first.  Let’s make it happen. Oh, and term limits for Congress please.

Addendum: If you haven’t watched these videos, you really should.  No, really.

Politics and Eschatology

I am a Bible believing Christian. What’s more, I’m a pretribulational premillennial Christian. That means that I believe the next thing to happen in world History as it relates to prophecy is the rapture where every believer will be lifted into the air to meet Jesus Christ in the clouds and then spend 7 years in heaven with Him, while a seven year period of ever worsening trouble happens on earth before we return at the end of the 7 years to defeat Satan and the world’s forces. Then Christ sets up his thousand year reign from Jerusalem.

I am an American citizen. I believe strongly in the principles that our founding fathers espoused, that people should have the right to speak, worship, and live as they please, insomuch as it does not infringe on other people’s rights to the same. I believe that the United States of America is the greatest country that has ever existed in the history of the world.

And I believe it’s over.

I’ve said this before, that I think our country is done. As a Christian, I believe there’s a reason why the United States isn’t mentioned in the book of Revelation: because we’re not around.  When a majority of evangelical (read: conservative Christian) voters in South Carolina decide that the best hope for our future is a misogynistic, adulterous, immoral, dishonest, pro-choice narcissist like Donald Trump, I have little hope that any conservative can be successful in leading this country.

A Trump/Clinton/Sanders White House might be the last nail in the coffin. The fact that I’m a believer reminds me that no matter what happens here on Earth, I have a home waiting for me, but I will fight for my earthly country until it no longer exists.

And unlike Ben Carson, I can read the writing on the wall.
