Barack Obama is a Christian, says the Associated Press (and him):
“What I found during the course of this work was, one, that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they come together and find common ground,” he told the congregation. “The other thing I discovered was that values of honesty, hard work, empathy, compassion were values that were spoken about in church …. I realized that Scripture and the words of God fit into the values I was raised in.”
What I find interesting about this statement is that Obama became a Christian because it agreed with the things he already believed, not because it was true. It’s like he’s saying, “Yeah, I’m a Christian because I found out that Christians believe what I have always believed, so it works for me.” I’m sure someone out there could say this more succinctly but here goes:
God is supposed to change us, not help us recognize that we don’t need to be changed. The Bible teaches repentance. The Bible doesn’t teach that you’re ok just the way you are.
I also find it interesting that he says “Scripture AND the words of God” (emphasis mine). Last I checked, Scripture IS the Word of God, not something in addition to the words of God. This just emphasizes for me that he isn’t a believer. The Bible doesn’t say, “Be ye honest, hard working, empathetic, and compassionate, for I am…..those things.” It says “Be ye HOLY for I am Holy.” This in addition to many other things reinforces my stand that I don’t want this man in office.
