Spanking

Survey on the MSN message boards for the past few weeks:
———————
Spanking is big news these days. Recently, a California congresswoman even proposed a ban on the practice. In the article “The Spanking Debate,” Natalie Lorenzi says families most often fall into one of these 4 categories when it comes to physical punishment:

-Never spank
-Used to spank but don’t anymore
-Spank now but wish we didn’t
-Pro-spanking

Which one do you fall into? Or do you have a different view?

To which I replied:

Hmmm. What are our options?

“-Never spank
-Used to spank but don’t anymore
-Spank now but wish we didn’t
-Pro-spanking”

Seems like three out of four are negative about spanking. So there are varieties of people who DONT spank, but everybody that is “pro-spanking” is lumped into the same category. As one who believes in spanking, I resent being lumped with child abusers. I do not “beat” my children. I do not “slap” my kids. I spank them. I will continue to do so, even if it becomes illegal.

I submit the following reasons why spanking is good:

-It is a time-tested successful method of discipline. It has worked for thousands of years.

-The Bible says to do so. Also, the Bible says, “Do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” The Bible doesn’t say, “Beat up your kid.” It says, “Teach your kids, and correct them (spanking as well as other methods) when they are wrong

-It teaches children that their negative actions have negative consequences. When a kid disrespects their parents and they get spanked, I submit that this lesson is easier for the child than if they have to learn it when they are in their 20’s when they mouth off to their employer and get fired.

My Dog

My dog, Angus, is a dork. He wasn’t a dork before I took him to the vet. He is 17 weeks old (just about 4mos), weighs 31 lbs, and I figured it was about time for me to get him neutered. Someone suggested that, when I get him neutered, I also have his back dewclaws removed. I looked at his dewclaws, and the back ones were indeed very floppy and didn’t seem to be articulated to anything but skin. So I agreed that this would be a good time to have those removed, since he would be put under for the neutering anyway. I dropped him off at the vet on Tuesday morning, and they said to pick him up Wednesday afternoon.
I went to the vet to pick him up yesterday afternoon. The vet tech brought him out of “the back” (where all the really cool vet stuff takes place), and here was my beautiful, black dog. He had bandages on his back legs because of the stitches where the dewclaws were removed. I kinda expected that. But he also had this dorky looking white collar on. You know, the ones they use for those dogs who are too stupid to know that they shouldn’t chew off their own leg? AArgh! My dog is a dork! He has to keep the collar on until the stitches are removed. That takes place in two weeks.
At least he will not be making any little “Anguses” running around. We just have to get through these next two weeks. Then he will go back to being my cool dog. Oh, also, he got his last round of puppy shots as well as his next heartworm pill. Also, the vet told me that he has a mild case of mange. Nothing serious, but they need to treat him with a topical thing once a week for four weeks (got his first tx during his surgery).
Did I mention I got a dog at the end of November? 😉 I enrolled him in puppy training classes at the local Petsmart. Really they aren’t training him, they are training me to train him. So far he knows “Potty”, “Kennel”, “Outside”, “Hungry” (he goes nuts when he hears this word), “Off” (tells him to get off whoever or whatever he just jumped on…he’s still working on this one), “focus” (gets him to look at me), and “sit.” “Start my car” and “defrag my hard drive” aren’t taught until the advanced class. 😉

America’s Team?

This wasn’t the only thing that I noticed about the Bears fans. I was watching the NFC championship game again this morning (I had recorded it), and I noticed that, at one point (it was about 6mins left in whatever quarter it was…I think the second), the camera panned the Bears crowd, and there was a Bears fan staring right at the camera, giving the camera the finger. That’s just rude.

I don’t know who is going to win the Super Bowl (GO COLTS!), but I do know that Indianapolis fans beat the Bears fans for civility and common decency.

Borders

Thinking about this border thing…

Isn’t our border supposed to be like the threshold of a house? Inside the house is our “safe zone” and we control who comes in and who is allowed to stay. I feel strongly that if someone tries to come into our country illegally, we should prevent them from doing so, with any means necessary. If they are armed, then they are committing an act of war against our country, and should be eliminated with prejudice. If someone came into my house without my permission, I would chase them out. If they were armed, or threatened my family, I would do everything in my power to remove them from my house with new toe jewelry (a tag).
