Super Bowl statistics

Just messing around a little, looking through NFL records. Those of you who don’t care about football: this post will bore you. Move on to something else. Seriously. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.I made a list of all the teams that have won Super Bowls, and how many they won:
FIVE WINS: Cowboys, Steelers, 49ers
THREE: Packers, Raiders, Redskins, Giants, Patriots
TWO: Colts, Dolphins, Broncos
ONE: Jets, Chiefs, Bears, Rams, Ravens, Buccaneers

Here are the teams that have never won a Super Bowl, separated by conference:
AFC: Bills, Bengals, Browns, Texans, Jaguars, Titans, Chargers. That’s seven teams, two of which are recent expansion teams (Texans and Jaguars).
NFC : Eagles, Lions, Vikings, Falcons, Panthers, Saints, Cardinals, Seahawks. That’s eight teams, only one of which is a recent expansion team (Panthers).

The NFL teams that have been to the Super Bowl but have never won: Vikings have been four times (most recent 1977), Bills four times in a row (lost all four…I remember feeling bad for them, since their last two games of that four game series were against Aikman’s Cowboys, and the Bills got shellacked both times). The Bengals and Eagles have both been twice without winning, and the other five teams only once (Titans, Chargers, Falcons, Panthers, and Seahawks).

Now, here are the real losers. Not only have the following teams never won a Super Bowl, they have never even made it to the big dance: AFC: Browns, Texans, Jaguars NFC: Lions, Saints, Cardinals. These six teams (four of which have been around for decades, and one–Cardinals–is the oldest professional football organization in the country) epitomize the frustration that Cubs fans feel every year. To get to the Super Bowl (let alone win), would be a plus for these poor fans.

Movie Review

Well, I just watched 3:10 to Yuma. It was the 2007 version (not the 1957 version). It was a pretty good western. There was some violence (obviously…you can’t have a good western without people getting shot) and some language in it that I didn’t appreciate. Nowadays you would have to live in a cave to avoid foul language. The plot was well developed, as were the characters. No real spoilers here, for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie. The story involves a outlaw named Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), who robs a stagecoach, but gets captured in the aftermath. Dan Evans (Christian Bale) is a local rancher who signs on to transport Wade to the train station in the next town. That train arrives at 3:10, and it goes to the prison in Yuma (hence the title). Wade’s gang makes the requisite rescue attempt, with a $200 twist that I thought spoke to the sin nature in us all.

The ending was different than the 1957 version, and it left me thinking. When I watch most movies, I leave it with a feeling of “that ended well” or “that ending was no good.” In this movie, all of the loose ends were tied up, but I had to sit there and think about the characters and their actions.

Why do we choose to do anything in this life? Is there anybody that is truly “incorrigible?” To put a spiritual slant on it: is there anyone whom the love of God cannot change? I believe that anyone can change, if they are given the opportunity. Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Third World Football Champions

In some parts of the world, the loser of the Super Bowl is the winner

Part of me always wondered what the NFL did with the shirts and hats of the losing team. I mean, you know they had to have manufactured them, since they are available immediately after the game. It’s nice to know that something good comes from it.
