IRS

Last year the IRS was withholding too much from my paycheck for the first six months. I checked with my tax program on my computer, and it told me to claim “17” for my exemptions. In theory, this would lower the amount that the IRS withheld, so that I wouldn’t end up getting a huge refund from all the extra money the government would borrow from me interest free. It worked, because I did my taxes, and I ended up owing just over $100 in federal taxes (after having 5K withheld). I thought, “OK, great! Now I have to switch my withholding so I don’t end up paying next year.” I got a new W-4, filled it out, and was going to hand it in Monday night at work. Worked out pretty smooth right?

Not so, McGee! I got a letter from the Infernal Revenue Sadists, and it said (in effect), “Your withholding is way too high (17), and so we are going to automatically change your withholding to a Single rate with 0 (zero) exemptions.” Holy flaming dollar bills, Batman! The letter goes on to say that if I file a new W-4 claiming greater than the amount specified (zero), it will be ignored. AAAhhhh! So I need to call the IRS today and clarify how I can get this corrected. I can understand them automatically changing my status, but why, when I have filed “Married filing jointly” for the past 13 tax years, would they change my rate to single??? And why would they make my exemptions zero when I obviously have myself, my wife, and my three kids as exemptions? Literally, this is your tax dollars at work.

Huckabee supports eliminating the IRS and proposing a flat tax. Yet another reason to support him.

UPDATE 02/05/08 2330:
I called the IRS this morning when I got home from work. The lady was very helpful. She told me that they change people to “single, 0 exemptions” so that they get motivated to call in and fix the problem. She went through the W4 with me, plugged in my current income, and came up with a correct exemption number and “married” status. So everything’s copacetic. Thanks for the high blood pressure, government bureaucracy!

What now?

So I’ve decided to give up Colts games for Lent. Ha ha ha ha ha. Seriously, watching and following the Colts (and my fantasy team) took up a major portion of my “leisure activities” for the months of September-January. I got used to checking nfl.com, espn.com, and all of the Colts and Chiefs blogs this fall/winter, that now I don’t really know what I will do to fill that void. I did a jigsaw puzzle the other day. I haven’t done a puzzle in a long time. I guess I will now have time.

Last Wednesday night a friend of mine at church challenged me to go the entire month of February drinking nothing but water. I accepted the challenge, and we are both now drinking only water. All food is fair game, but I am watching what I eat as well (mostly just cutting down on portion sizes and sweets). Should be interesting. I started eating less and exercising more in mid-January, and I lost 12 pounds by February 1st. Now I have lost another pound as of yesterday when I awoke. 13 down, 62 to go!

Today is Super Tuesday. I guess we will get to see if the nation’s conservatives have been hoodwinked by McCain and Romney or not. As a Republican, I have always voted for the most conservative person on the ticket. That has always been the Republican candidate. However, this year we have: Billary (liberal), Osama (liberal), McCain (liberal), Romney (liberal), and Huckabee (conservative). I have pretty much decided that I am going to vote for Huckabee for President. If Huckabee drops out, I will be voting for a write-in candidate (who will obviously not win) but I will not be held responsible for choosing a liberal President.

Giants Beat the Patriots!!!!

>

Wow, was that a good game or what??? First off, even if I didn’t care who was playing, that was a hard fought and exciting game. But the Patriots lost!! I couldn’t believe it, because they were such a long shot, and I was so sick of the media talking about the “pursuit of perfection” by the Cheatriots, er Patriots. Newsflash: if you cheat, it’s not perfection. What happens to Olympic athletes who are caught cheating? They have to give their medals back.
And here’s a good picture of me in my “Giants” jersey. I just modified my #18 Peyton Manning jersey a little to make it a #10 Eli Manning jersey. Thanks, little brother!

Snow is a no Show

>

I keep telling my brother Tony that he needs to move out here, because it’s warmer and we don’t get so much nasty weather. I was ready to eat my words if 8 inches of snow fell overnight, but some warm gulf front pushed the snow to the north (mostly), meaning that we only got about an inch. They say that we may get another couple of inches throughout the day, but they are the same people that said we’d get 8 inches overnight. Yeah. As you can see from the picture, you can still see the grass in my front yard.

So I am taking the kids to school this morning. I called work to see if they needed me. They don’t. I get the day off, but the kids don’t. Bummer.

Now it’s off to navigate the “slick roads.” If anybody in Iowa is reading this, “slick” here means “wet.” (now watch me get into an accident. That would be a laugh). It’s currently 35 degrees. It’s supposed to get up in the 50’s in a few days.
